“The End” seems to indicate that whatever has transpired has completely rolled over into lifeless annals of history without any ability on our part to reach out and resuscitate it, leaving nothing in our hands but a shadowy memory of what no longer is.
There is a scene in the film Lady Bird where the title character, played by Saoirse Ronan, stands on a sidewalk in Sacramento with her best friend, staring up at a big, beautiful, blue house imagining they lived inside. Her real house is shades of brown—from the carpet and kitchen cupboards to the wooden paneling of the den. It looks familiar—a little drab and well worn.
Growing up, I thought of myself as a bad actor. But in college, I realized the truth. I was a brilliant actor who had mastered only one role. I was my own alter ego, a bit funnier than the original, a bit friendlier, a bit more resilient. And of course, much less gay.
I was sick of the eating disorder that tormented our oldest daughter, the smell of vomit in our bathroom, the arguments my husband and I had about where to hide the food so Jenny wouldn’t devour it on her night binges.
I’m tired of the assumptions that I am unhealthy, debilitated or fragile. My bone disease doesn’t break my zeal for life, it breaks my bones which are two different things.
