Coldplay: “Magic” and “Midnight”
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you should be well aware that Coldplay has released not one, but TWO new songs! Both tracks are in anticipation of the May 19th release of their new album, Ghost Stories. I am writing this with a huge bias: I LOVE Coldplay. Mostly for the anthemic songs that can make you cry and feel all sorts of emotions (“The Scientist” gets me every time!) but I really appreciate how they reinvent themselves while staying true to what makes them Coldplay.
“Midnight” explores a more minimalistic side of the band, relying heavily on Martin’s distorted voice to carry the song. It’s very experimental and while it’s not for everybody, it certainly stands out.
“Magic” however brings the band back into familiar territory complete with a catchy hook. It is sung in such an earnest way, you start to feel the song. It’s simple yet memorable and is reminiscent of the sounds that have made Coldplay the band it is today. I am really looking forward to the rest of the album.
Ben Khan: “Eden”
Ben Khan may be the Internet’s best-kept secret. With only a handful of tracks, he has managed to catch the attention of a few people, nabbing a few mentions on Pitchfork’s website. Other than that, he keeps a low profile. He addresses his secretive ways in an exclusive article that can be found here. In the meantime, the gems he has given us will most certainly hold us over.
I really wish I could explain why I love his song “Eden,” but you will just have to trust me and listen to it as it speaks for itself. His breathy vocals combine with pieces of R&B, funk, and a few sounds that are not so easily labeled. Together they make a soulful track that has me hitting repeat time after time. Check out his Soundcloud to hear his other tracks; they’re all equally good. He is slated to release an EP this year, so keep an eye out for him!
