The Intersection of Faith and Culture
If you come out of your years of studies keenly aware of your lack of knowledge, like you’ve just scratched the surface of what you don’t know, I hope you embrace it. Owning your limitations helps you step into greater wholeness, and there’s nothing quite like attending school to catalyze that process.
Earlier this year, I decided to try a little experiment and see if I could live without a computer or smartphone. Like the prisoner who made his way out of the cave to see reality for the first time, I began to notice the world around me with fresh eyes.
Seeing is the most immediate way we navigate the world. It is also one of the most automatic. You can’t not have a spiritual perspective, just as you can’t not have a natural perspective. The only question is, what will your perspective be?
Kanye West brings much-needed energy, innovation and musical integrity to Christian music. Although the beginnings of this new path may not be as polished as they could be, West’s faith will continue to positively inform his creative practice and Christian music will be better for it in the long run.
I learned a lot about discipleship in classrooms full of atheist students and professors. Years later, as I study at a Christian graduate school, I can see how the Spirit was teaching me about discipleship throughout my undergraduate years.
Whether we are aware of it or not, our perspective and attitude towards work communicates very clearly what we believe about the Kingdom of God. That is, what the Kingdom’s purpose on the earth is, and our role within that purpose.
