The Intersection of Faith and Culture
I believe being fluent in the Gospel is what God wants his people to experience with the gospel. He wants them to be able to translate the world around them and the world inside of them through the lens of the gospel—the truths of God revealed in the person and work of Jesus. Gospel-fluent people think, feel, and perceive everything in light of what has been accomplished in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
People’s interest in regulating their sleep in order to accommodate a busy lifestyle only dates back as far as the Industrial Revolution. The development of electric light, and the rationale that fewer hours asleep meant more hours of productivity at work reshaped human sleeping habits drastically.
Worship wrests us from the stories of earthly kingdoms, and exposes them for the lies they are – whether it’s the story of Trump’s or Hilary’s America. Our public worship stands to destabilize the entire American empire – every empire. There is no more radical act than the worship of the Church.
God gave us sexual desires with a purpose in mind. And hiding from them goes directly against that purpose. Sexual desires reveal our most basic need for connection to him and others.
Ultimately, yoga allows us to chip away at external distractions to become people who are sensitive and aware, alert to the presence of God in Creation.
Paul, in 1 Corinthians, implies that although everything in the Bible is important, not everything is equally important. Some doctrines are more important. To simplify things, we could think of three levels of theological triage.
