Christmas DIY: Pinecone ornaments

The coming and going of American Thanksgiving and the madness of Black Friday signifies the next big step towards the summit of holiday and consumerism madness: Christmas. Believe it or not, there are only 5 weekends till the most wonderful time of the year. So like last year, Converge will be suggesting weekend projects for you to get crafty and creative with friends and family to help you get into the Yuletide mood, and to guide some last minute stragglers further on the countdown. Nothing better to bring on the Christmas cheer than to get your hands sticky making something personal you can share with or give to your loved ones.

Some of you may have had your tree up for days (…or weeks even? Keeners!) and for those who are still avoiding the dusty boxes fill with ornaments, no worries. There’s still time. So let’s begin with house decor!

Love decorating for Christmas on a wallet-friendly budget? Now we are all about being frugal and using what you have. This pinecone DIY is simple, resourceful, and above all, inexpensive. Simply step into your backyard or explore your neighbourhood park to bring a little bit of the outdoors into your home!

DIY Pinecone Ornaments

What you will need:

  • Pinecones (dried)
  • Branches (dried)
  • Ball of yarn
  • White acrylic paint
  • Extra fine glitter
  • Paint brush
  • Scissors

Step one:

Start by painting your pinecone tips with a small amount of white paint

Step two:

While the paint is still wet, sprinkle some glitter over top

Step three:

Set the pinecones aside to dry, and start covering your branch with yarn. Start wrapping the branch at one end and continue wrapping till the end. If there is a fork in your branch, cover that separately with a new line of yarn.

Step four:

Once your pinecones are dried and your branches wrapped, measure out another piece of yarn to determine how the pinecone will hang. Tie a knot at the top of your pinecone with the desired length then hang it on your branch.
These natural decorations can also be hung as ornaments on your tree, to fill glass jars, to be used as place cards, or even as gift wrap toppers! The possibilities are endless, so have fun!
